When to schedule your maternity session?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions I get. When is the right time to schedule my maternity session? Every photographer is different and has their preferences, but I usually tell my clients 32-36 weeks. There are cases when we can go outside of that window, but after years of shooting maternity photography this has become my sweet spot.

Why do I pick this timeframe? I have two main reasons! One- your belly is nice and round by that point. The whole goal of maternity photography is to capture that precious bump. To showcase the beauty of all the changes your body is making to create a new life. So we need to show it off! By shooting in the later weeks of pregnancy, we are setting up for those perfect bump pictures.

Which brings me to my next reason, your comfort! The reason why I want to schedule you before 36 weeks is to make sure you’re comfortable. I have grown my own babies and I know all too well how uncomfortable those last few weeks can be. I do not want you to be hating life while we’re working together. By ensuring we’re shooting a bit earlier, it’s giving us the best chance that you will not only love your photos, but also the experience!

Are there exceptions to this timeframe? Of course! High risk pregnancies, slow to show bumps, illness, weather changes, LIFE. There are many reasons why we would have to schedule either before or after my suggested timeframe. And that’s OKAY! This timeframe is just that, a suggestion! Every momma is different and every pregnancy is different. The ultimate answer to this question is what time YOU feel the most comfortable scheduling. The best answer is to get ahold of your wanted photographer in the late stage of your first trimester and get on their schedule.
